A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a 17-digit/character unique number that is assigned to a vehicle to give it a distinct and a verifiable identity. VIN is also known as chassis number, serial number or CRiS number. While CRiS is only used in the UK, the identification number is known as chassis number or VIN number commonly in other countries. A has to VIN adhere to 2 international standards, namely; ISO 3779 2009 and US Standard FMVSS 115. The characters are not chosen at random, rather every single character and its position represents some information related to the make of the vehicle, model of the vehicle, year of manufacturing and certain specific details of the vehicle. How does a VIN number look like? A VIN is a real long series made up of characters that include the numerals 0-9 and uppercase A-Z letters. The letters I, O and Q are excluded from the series and are not considered to be valid characters for the VIN. Usually a decoder is used to get this information from the VIN, however it can be done manually even though it is very time consuming. Locating Your Caravan’s VIN How to locate or check a VIN on your caravan? All caravans that have been made since 1992 should have VIN embedded on the vehicle. Although, there are various locations where a VIN may be placed by the manufacturer. Let’s take a look at some of the most common places on your Australian caravan where you could find the VIN number. For a caravan VIN number check, look at the corner of every window of the caravan, a VIN could be stamped there or placed down beside the entrance door to the caravan. This is in the form of a sticker that is provided by the manufacturer. If you have trouble locating your caravan’s VIN at the entrance door, check for the corners or you could also spot a VIN at the lower section of the sides where you are more likely to come across it. Remember, VIN can be provided separately or along with other details such as tyre pressure, tyre size, model details, etc. Once you have located it, make sure you note it down for future reference.
